Open Innovation

Why Open Innovation

With an Open Innovation philosophy, we bring external ideas and technologies into our own innovation process and allow increased information sharing and collaboration to create value.

In an effort to serve China’s growing healthcare needs, we partner with various pools of world-class innovation – research institutions, physicians, and other companies – to empower an innovation ecosystem and translate collaboration into actionable outcomes.

Invasive Neurostimulation Therapies

DBS is a major surgical procedure to treat disabling neurological symptoms of PD, such as tremors, rigidity, and stiffness. With the global rise of disability and death due to PD, novel therapeutic avenues are in great demand. Recent breakthroughs in electrode and battery designs, close-loop and on-demand stimulation would improve the clinical outcome of DBS.

SCS is widely used to help manage chronic pain caused by various conditions such as chronic leg or arm pain, diabetic neuropathy, failed back surgery syndrome, and arachnoiditis. A large number of clinical trials of SCS are underway – suggesting that this field is rapidly growing and there is a high demand for improved technologies.

VNS has been a valuable treatment to control seizures for people with epilepsy. Unlike other types of epilepsy surgery, which involve brain operations, the VNS works through the vagus nerve in the neck to reduce seizures. Some recent developments including close-loop and non-invasive techniques may improve clinical efficacy and minimize side effects.

RNS is another epilepsy treatment that monitors brain activity and delivers electrical stimulation when a seizure is detected. About 30% of epilepsy patients are resistant to medical therapy, making VNS or RNS desirable treatments for them, especially if seizures originate deep in the brain or close to brain regions that control critical functions.

Non-Invasive Neurostimulation Therapies

TMS is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic stimulation to improve symptoms of depression or migraine. As a non-invasive treatment, TMS has the advantages that it is an outpatient service that does not require anesthesia and is usually well tolerated. Research is also ongoing to study TMS to treat other conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, etc.

TENS is a non-invasive method for pain relief. TENS unit is usually small and portable and could be used at home or away, anytime pain relief is needed. TENS may provide short-term relief of pain and muscle spasms caused by a wide range of conditions including arthritis, period pain, pelvic pain, sports injuries, etc.
